• She was asking for

She was asking for fellowship and support from fellow dieters. What she received was a public cyber-stoning from hostile opinionated and poorly informed sanctimonious people.

I was a bit taken back by the arrogance of some respondents: that if Lisa simply had the willpower she could lose the weight.

Lisa has 170lbs to lose. In the last two months she has lost 7 pounds and a poster told her that was wonderful progress ? she should just keep doing what she?s doing and lose the remaining 170 lbs. It would take Lisa, losing 3.5 lbs/month, 48 months to lose her weight. That is without setbacks or life?s little disruptions. That?s 48 months of maintaining a rigid diet/exercise program while seeing little progress. Few people can accomplish that. Take a look around, there are a lot of obese people struggling just to get by, yearning to be in any body besides their own fat one.

In the same forum another poster had the nerve to write Eat Less: Exercise More. Calories In = Calories Out. Really? Thanks for the help with the math.

Another threw in the cheesy slogan: Grit Determination + No Excuses = Goals Reached and Dreams Becoming Reality.

Guess what folks? Catchy phrases and simple math don?t cut it when a person is morbidly obese.

I do not personally know Lisa, nor do I know her state of self-esteem.

I can tell you with heartfelt sincerity that when I had 150 pounds to lose I was in such a spiral of despair and hopelessness that nothing short of surgery worked for me.

  • Show your interest and enthusiasm

Show your interest and enthusiasm for the job by being well-briefed on important issues.

    Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.

A practice interview can help you to anticipate major discussion points and get experience in dealing with tough questions. And don’t just focus on the content of your answers: interviewers gain a lot of information from non-verbal cues and body language. If you’re practicing with a friend, ask for feedback on the impact of your delivery and gestures.

    Be organized.

Keep a checklist in the days leading up to the interview date. Savvy interviewees know the value of preparing for the unexpected — so make sure that you have essential items at the ready, such as a pen (that works!) and paper for notes, a spare copy of your resume, and a supply of business cards, if you use them. It’s also useful to have a mental list of questions that you might want to ask the interviewer.

The knowledge that you’ve prepared thoroughly for an interview contributes to a calm and positive attitude — and don’t forget the importance of a good night’s sleep beforehand to help you stay confident and alert!

  • Be Greater Than AIDS: Get Yourself Tested Week Promotes Free HIV

Be Greater Than AIDS: Get Yourself Tested Week Promotes Free HIV

    0 Comments | U.S. Newswire, Jun 16, 2010

Ciara, Kelly Rowland, MTV’s Sway Calloway and New Boyz Join Effort to Help Get Out the Word about HIV and STD Testing

NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The first Be Greater Than AIDS: Get Yourself Tested Week will kick off on June 19th, calling on Americans, especially young people, to get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the week leading up to National HIV Testing Day (June 27th). The campaign will spotlight 10 cities — Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York, and Washington D.C. — where free testing is available and other special events are taking place.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), one in five of the more than one million Americans living with HIV aren’t aware that they have it. HIV and other more common STDs often show no symptoms and thus frequently go undiagnosed. Testing and treatment can save lives and reduce the further spread of HIV and other STDs.

The special week long promotion brings together GYT: Get Yourself Tested, a year-round campaign spearheaded by MTV, the Kaiser Family Foundation, the CDC and Planned Parenthood to increase testing for STDs, including HIV, among young people, and Greater Than AIDS, a national movement launched last year by Kaiser and the Black AIDS Institute to respond to the domestic AIDS crisis, in particular the disproportionate epidemic facing Black Americans. Gilead Sciences provided financial resources to support the promotion.

“Testing is about community. We will never get the HIV epidemic under control until everyone understands that we are all in this together,” said Frank Oldham, Jr., President and CEO of the National Association of People With AIDS. “Getting tested should be part of every American’s routine health care, from adolescence through senior years, and no one should be stopped from getting tested by fear or shame.”

Elements of Be Greater than AIDS: Get Yourself Tested Week include:

    * Free HIV Testing and events in 10 Cities: Young people can log on to http://www.GYTNOW.org to find locations offering free HIV testing during the week. Additionally, Planned Parenthood health centers in select cities will open their doors to offer free and low cost HIV testing on select days during the week. Counseling on other STDs will also be provided. Select Walgreens stores in Chicago will also offer free HIV testing on June 25th and will support the effort with in-store promotions. For more information about locations and times, visit: http://www.GYTnow.org

    * Celebs Talk Testing: Ciara, Kelly Rowland, MTV News Correspondent Sway Calloway, New Boyz and other celebrities will urge young people to take action to know their status in a series of new TV and radio public service ads (PSAs) produced by MTV and in some local market interviews and events.

    * Media Partners: A cross-section of media partners, including MTV, Clear Channel Radio, CBS Radio, and Radio One, among others are providing significant airtime for the campaign’s PSAs. Some other ways the media partners are helping to get out the message include:

    * Clear Channel Radio will debut on June 19 “I Am Greater Than AIDS,” a half hour special radio show hosted by renowned entertainer, author and radio personality Steve Harvey.

    * In Atlanta, HOT 107.9 (Radio One) will kick off the week at its annual Birthday Bash, June 19th, with an on-stage call out by talent and promotions throughout the Birthday Bash arena.

    * In Washington, DC, WPGC — 95.5 (CBS Radio) DJ, Anji Corely will get tested on air as part of the promotion.

    * New Mobile App: MTV will unveil a new iPhone application based on Pos or Not, an interactive game initially launched online with the Kaiser Family Foundation that challenges stereotypes and breaks down the barriers that may prevent people from talking openly about HIV/AIDS, getting tested, and using protection. People from across the U.S. — half of whom are living with HIV and half who are not — share parts of their lives for “Pos or Not” by divulging their HIV status to help dispel myths and misconceptions about HIV and AIDS. Players confront their own HIV stereotypes as they guess whether a profiled participant is positive or negative based only on a photo and a few personal details, such as what they do on the weekends or their favorite kind of music. To date, the game has been played 10.1 million times online.

    * Targeted Online Resources: In addition, a customized web page at http://www.GYTNOW.org provides information about free testing and events in each city as well as other informational and community resources. Beyond the 10 cities, users can use the site’s testing location finder to identify local resources anywhere in the country by simply entering a zip code. The site also offers a multitude of resources including facts about STDs and talking tips on how to discuss STD testing with partners, parents, and health care providers.

Be Greater Than AIDS: Get Yourself Tested Week is supported by the National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA), which launched the first National HIV Testing Day in 1995, along with the National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) and the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD)

    Shark tank wedding

A New York couple have taken the plunge inside a shark tank.

April Pignataro and Michael Curry were lowered in a steel cage into the tank to exchange their wedding vows at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, N.Y, on Sunday.

She wore a white wet suit; he wore a black one.

The experienced divers spoke their vows into radio headgear transmitted to a minister outside the tank. About 75 guests watched from behind glass.

The tank is part of the Lost City of Atlantis shark exhibit.

    * Los Angeles

    4 months for smuggler

A man who smuggled 14 Asian songbirds into the country by hiding them inside his pants during a flight from Vietnam to Los Angeles has been sentenced to four months in prison.

Sony Dong, of Garden Grove, was also ordered Monday to pay $4,000 in restitution to federal authorities caring for the birds.

The 46-year-old was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport last year after an inspector spotted bird droppings on his socks and saw feathers peeking out from under his pants. The birds were held in cloth wrappings attached to his legs and calves.

Co-defendant Duc (DUCK’) Le was sentenced to six months in prison. He was ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors have said Le was the ringleader of the operation.

    * Aurora, Colo.

    Bikinis lead to protest

A suburban Denver city councilwoman is urging people to boycott businesses near a coffee shop that sends bikini-clad women onto nearby city streets to advertise.

Councilwoman Molly Markert sent a letter of complaint, signed by about 30 Aurora residents, to the manager of the property where Perky Cups operates.

Markert suggested in the May 20 letter that the women promoting the coffee shop were in danger of being “raped and murdered.” She wrote that the petition signers have pledged to not buy anything at the shopping center until the women stop advertising in the streets.

Perky Cups owner Jason Bernal says his 10 employees aren’t at risk and that Markert’s letter went overboard.

    * Zurich, Switzerland

    Elephant in Zurich

Swiss police say an elephant that escaped from a circus and wandered through Zurich’s banking and commercial district has been recaptured.

City police spokesman Michael Wirz says officers chased the elephant through the city for an hour until a keeper was able to control the animal and bring it to safety.

He says nobody was hurt and there were no reports of damage following Sunday’s escapade.

Niklaus Leuenberger, a spokesman for the Knie circus, said Sabu the elephant got loose as she was about to be loaded onto a trailer.

THE DAILY OUTRAGE: Fluorescent lighting is hideous, anyway

    0 Comments | Examiner, The; Washington, D.C., Jul 18, 2010 | by Anna Dorminey

    WHO: Department of Energy

WHAT: Although its Web site advertises methods for cutting energy use by 50 to 75 percent, the Department of Energy is evidently struggling to implement these measures. Rather than, for example, making the switch to light-emitting diode lighting, many of the department’s buildings still use fluorescent bulbs.

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: $76 million of the department’s $190 million electric bill is lighting. A recently released internal audit states that $2.2 million could be saved from more efficient lighting.

WHERE TO VENT: Call the Department of Energy at 202-586-5000 and suggest that they take their own advice.

  • You can choose

    You can choose to
think about things you cannot change, regrets about your past,
fears about your future OR you can choose to change these
thoughts thereby empowering yourself to take a happier, less
    stressful road.

If you have a situation ask yourself ?What can I do about this??
If there is clearly no solution, this is what you MUST do.

Think of the situation. Write down your thoughts.
For example – When you were young your father never came home
until after your bedtime and on weekends he never had time to
watch you play basketball. Your thoughts are: My father was
never there for me when I was little, he didn?t love me.

Look at it carefully. What attitude to this situation would you
rather have? One that is positive. One you can believe.

  • In other words, you must be capable

In other words, you must be

capable of being reached. So, email is not unlike any other form of communication in that requires consideration for the message, the sender and the receiver. Here are four critical keys for email effectiveness.

    Consistency

Do you check your phone messages every day? Or do you let that blinking red light pulsate out of the corner of your eye for a week before you listen to the recording and call someone back?

Of course you get your phone messages every day! Why wouldn’t you? Besides, there’s bound to be some important calls on there you’d like to return immediately.

Okay, so let me ask you this: When you’re at work, do you look at new papers in your box consistently? Or do you let that bundle of folders, papers and flyers spew out of edge onto the floor?

Of course you check your mail often! You don’t want to miss any important dates or notes.

And yet, some people don’t check their email every day.

  • Plane from Mexico set to land here today

Plane from Mexico set to land here today

0 Comments | Charleston Gazette, The, Apr 29, 2009 | by Alison Knezevich

Yeager Airport officials are preparing for the scheduled arrival tonight of a chartered flight carrying 170 people who had traveled to the Mexican resort city of Puerto Vallarta – a few days after health officials warned of a possible swine flu pandemic originating in Mexico.

A Miami Air charter plane is scheduled to arrive in Charleston at 9 p.m., Airport Director Rick Atkinson said. The flight departed from Charleston last Friday and was carrying 162 employees and customers of State Electric Supply of Huntington, plus eight crewmembers, he said.

Airport officials are scheduled to meet with the Kanawha- Charleston Health Department this morning to discuss precautions the airport must take, Yeager said.

“We will cooperate fully with [health department head] Dr. [Rahul] Gupta and his staff,” he said.

Mexican airports have been screening travelers for swine flu symptoms, Atkinson said. Before arriving in Charleston, the plane will stop in New Orleans, where the passengers will go through customs.

At that point, the passengers should receive pamphlets on swine flu symptoms and information on what they should do if they think they’re sick, Gupta said.

The screening process is meant to help prevent infected people from boarding a plane, he said.

“If all the screening processes are held in place and done like they’re supposed to, we should be in pretty good shape,” Gupta said.

Symptoms of swine flu are similar to seasonal flu and include fever, cough, headaches, body aches and sore throat.

At the meeting with airport officials, Gupta plans to discuss what airport employees should look out for. “That way the airport staff will be well-equipped and educated,” he said.

A woman at State Electric’s corporate office in Huntington on Tuesday denied that the company had a group traveling in Mexico.
